Pennsylvania's second
largest city, with an estimated metro population of 2,500,000, early
Pittsburgh was a booming frontier trading post and gateway to the west
for American pioneers. Once the focus of the nation's steel industry,
its rich deposits of coal and petroleum continue to make Pittsburgh
one of the major U.S. manufacturing centers. In addition to steel, the
city's diversification embraces the manufacture of glass, electrical
equipment, machinery, chemical products, and the processing of petroleum,
coal, and coke--plus a number of industrial research laboratories. In
recent years, Pittsburgh has shed its reputation as the smoky city,
thanks to an aggressive urban renewal program and the gradual shift
to high-technology companies specializing in computer data programming
and software industries.
Beautiful
downtown Pittsburgh, known as the Golden Triangle, is site of the Point
State park, Gateway Center, the striking Pittsburgh Plate Glass building,
and the aluminum-clad Alcoa Building. Among its leading institutions
are three major universities, advanced medical center, and the Mellon
Institute of Industrial Research. Other cultural attractions include
museums of fine arts and natural history, Carnegie Institute's comprehensive
library, a conservatory and science center, the Pittsburgh Playhouse,
the highly acclaimed Pittsburgh symphony, and light opera at the Civic
Arena. The city is a mecca for year-round sports fans who have their
choice of Three Rivers Stadium, home of the professional baseball Pirates
and football Steelers, and the Pittsburgh Panthers professional hockey
team. Pittsburgh boasts the nation's largest inland river port, an efficient
subway line for commuters, a major rail and highway system, an expressway
system that joins the Pennsylvania Turnpike east of the city, and to
the west the Pittsburgh International Airport. Two cable railways climb
the steep north face of Mount Washington for a panoramic view of the
city.
Much of America's
history is rooted in the Pittsburgh area. When a fort was built in February
1754 for the Ohio Land Company of Virginia--which had been granted rights
to the adjacent country by British King George II--the site of Pittsburgh
became one of strategic importance in the war between France and Great
Britain. The town of Pittsburgh was first laid out in 1764, enlarged
in 1784, and incorporated as a borough in 1794, the year in which it
was a center of agitation during the Whiskey Rebellion. Pittsburgh became
a city in 1816.
